Otter African Trail Run 2027: The Classic Returns
The Otter African Trail Run, presented by EasyEquities, is Africa's premium marathon-distance trail run. Dubbed the Grail of Trail, it follows the Otter Hiking Trail along the Tsitsikamma coastline, a route that's otherwise closed to runners.
Thanks to our partnership with SANParks, we get to open the trail to runners for one week each year. Hikers usually take five days to complete it. Our runners do it in one, through indigenous forest, up steep cliff-side climbs, across river crossings and along roughly 10km of beach.
Only 600 runners take on the Otter each year, with 300 places in the Challenge and 300 in the Race.
The route changes direction every year, and 2027 is a Classic year. We start at Storms River Mouth and finish in Nature's Valley.
Two Ways to Run It
The Challenge | 29 and 30 September 2027
A fearsome 11-hour cut-off. It's the same trail and route as the Race, with more time to take it all in.
The Race | 1 and 2 October 2027
An extreme 9-hour cut-off. It's the faster, more demanding version, and it's where the elite field races.
Both run over two days: Registration and the Prologue on day one, then the full Otter trail on day two.
How Entries Work
Phase 1, opens 26 October: for everyone who registered for Otter 2026, whether you made it to the finish or not. You get first dibs. You’ll see the option to enter either the Challenge or the Race. Your 2026 access is valid for one entry only. Corporate and Premium entries, open to everyone, also open on 26 October.
Phase 2, opens 2 November: open to everyone, with the remaining spots up for grabs. There are 300 places per event, so get in early.
